Racial trauma can lead to depression or PTSD in adolescents through a couple of key pathways. First, the constant exposure to racial discrimination and violence can cause chronic stress. This stress, when experienced repeatedly without adequate support or intervention, can overwhelm an adolescent's coping mechanisms, leading to symptoms associated with depression and PTSD. Secondly, the internalization of negative racial stereotypes and experiences of discrimination can severely impact an adolescent's self-esteem and sense of self-worth. This internalization process can foster feelings of isolation and worthlessness, key risk factors for developing depression.
